In the 1998 elections to the zilla parishads, the CPI(M) had secured 1,20,25,715 votes to win 560 zila parishad seats whereas the Congress, the TMC and the BJP together had got 1,34,14,538 votes bagging only 71 seats.
The CPI(M) goons heckled even two RSP ministers during their election campaigning.
In fact, this campaign had begun right in the wake of last Assembly elections when the CPI(M) celebrated its victory and the unexpected defeat suffered by the TMC by forcibly ‘reclaiming’ several marginal panchayats from the control of the erstwhile TMC-BJP alliance.

Yechury said the Election Commission had accepted the party's suggestion that the examination schedule not be disrupted, the revision of electoral rolls be completed before the announcement of elections and that the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura be held on a single day.
The CPI (M) had proof that an officer on special duty in the Prime Minister's Office wrote to the Director of the DAVP on January 21, the day of the dissolution of the Lok Sabha, asking him to issue these advertisements on behalf of the various Ministries.
The CPI (M) manifesto was under preparation and the broad themes included saving the country from the clutches of communal forces, working for an alternative secular government and strengthening the Left parties.

NEW DELHI, MARCH 7: With Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) acquiring a strength of 29 MLAs and CPI(M-L) seven MLAs in the newly-elected Bihar Assembly, the Election Commission today granted both ‘state party’ status.
The LJP and CPI(M-L) (among the Left parties, the latter has got the maximum number of seats in Bihar) applied for recognition as a state party to the Election Commission last week.

New Delhi, Nov 28: The Congress party appeared set to rule Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh after defeating rival BJP in the just-concluded assembly elections, the results of which were pouring in, in its favour.
