 Bukharin
After Lenin& death Bukharin became the leading theorist of the party and was chief of staff of the Bolshevik Party.
In February 1988, fifty years after Bukharin’s execution as a traitor, the verdict was reversed and his name cleared by the Soviet Supreme Court.
As a political radical Bukharin was frequently imprisoned and was exiled in 1911, during which timed he lived and worked in Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and the United States.

Novel Autobiography by a Leader of the Workers Revolution in Russia Imprisoned by Stalin, Bukharin Sings of Childhood ...
After all, Bukharin was not some retired statesman spinning out his memoirs in the leisure of his golden years.
Even then, ten years before his execution, Bukharin spoke in prophetic metaphors, telling Lev Kamenev that Stalin lived for revenge and would “cut the throat” of his political opponents.
(The Communist Party in the 1920s asked its leading members to provide brief autobiographical sketches, and Bukharin obliged with a short “Avtobiografiia” when he was 37.

Philosophical Arabesques by Nikolai Bukharin Excerpt
Lenin was one who did so and stated that Bukharin, although he was the party’s outstanding theorist, had not quite understood dialectics.
Korsh did so quite bitterly, even shouting during a speech of Bukharin at the 5th world congress of the comintern.
Radek, Pyatakov, Sokolnikov and others were sentenced to death or long terms of imprisonment in January 1937.

 Bukharin's revisionism
At the Inaugural Congress of Soviet Writers in 1934, Bukharin  praised at length the `defiantly apolitical' Boris Pasternak.
In 1934--1936, Bukharin  often wrote about the fascist danger and about the inevitable war with Nazism.
To fight fascism, `democratic reforms' had to be introduced to offer a `prosperous life' to the masses.

Nikolai Bukharin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Upon his return to Russia, Bukharin became one of the leading Bolsheviks in Moscow and was elected to the Central Committee.
During this time, he became closely associated with N.
As a result, Bukharin lost his position in the Comintern in April 1929 and was expelled from the Politburo in November of that year.

 Bukharin's confession
`Bukharin:  That is your opinion, but my opinion is different.'
On March 17, 1938, Davies  send a confidential message to the Secretary of State in Washington.
At last he knew that it had been a cardinal error to bring Bukharin  into open court.'

 Philosophical Arabesques by Nikolai Bukharin
For Bukharin, the process was to end with his confession before the Soviet court, facing the threat that his young family would be killed along with him if he did not.
After the death of Lenin, Bukharin co-operated with Stalin for a time.
The project constitutes a defense of the genuine legacy of Lenin's Marxism against the use of his memory to legitimate totalitarian power.

 Ehrenburg, I.G. - SovLit.com - Encyclopedia of Soviet Authors
On the orders of Stalin, he was given a ticket to attend the trial of his old friend Nikolai Bukharin.
The hero of this novel is a simple, good-natured Jew from Belorussia who wanders to Moscow, Warsaw, Germany, France, England and Palestine, suffering beatings, jailings, and indignities of all sorts wherever he goes.
Fearful and tired of waiting, Ehrenburg sent an appeal to Stalin, asking to be sent back to Spain.

Nikolai Bukharin on the Use of Individual Terror Against Stalin
What is remarkable about Jules Humbert-Droz’s last conversation with Bukharin held in early 1929, in which Bukharin indicates that his opposition group had taken the decision to utilize individual terror against Stalin, is that it emanates from a source which is sympathetic to Bukharin.
Aside from the official party and state documentation it has been mentioned by L.M. Kaganovich in his conversations with Feliks Chuyev.
Jules Humbert-Droz was not an ‘outsider’ but a Bukharin loyalist at the time of this conversation (he later joined the ranks of Swiss Social-Democracy).

Bukharin may justly be regarded as the co-author of the doctrine.

 Nikolai Ivanovich Bukharin
An advocate of slow agricultural collectivization and industrialization (the position of the so-called right opposition), Bukharin lost (1929) his major posts after that position was defeated by the Stalinist majority in the party.
Leon Trotsky: Early Career - Early Career Trotsky was born of Jewish parents in the S Ukraine.
In the Gorbachev era, Bukharin was rehabilitated and posthumously reinstated (1988) as a party member.

 Zizek, Bukharin and Stalin
There was a backlash against Stalin and Bukharin became its most articulate spokesman.
He was responsible for drafting the first Soviet Constitution, which included provisions for secret ballot, universal suffrage and the possibility of multi-candidate elections.
This Constitution is the best case for Bukharin's true beliefs, rather than the grotesque portrait drawn by Zizek and Koestler.

Swans Commentary: Nikolai Bukharin, "How it All Began," by Louis Proyect - lproy01
As with the case of many of his contemporaries, Bukharin's father was cowed into submission by Czar Alexander the Third, who "kept tightening the fist of his gendarmerie." His only outlet was an occasional jibe at the Orthodox Church or unfocused complaints about the system:
Between the time of his arrest on February 27, 1937 and until his execution on March 15, 1938, Nikolai Bukharin wrote prodigiously and against the ticking clock from within the bowels of Lubyanka Prison.
Although Bukharin tried to make sure that his manuscripts would not be interpreted as a challenge to Stalin, who could (and did) wreak vengeance against his family, there is little doubt that the contempt directed toward the chinovniks implied criticism of the bureaucratized socialist state as well.

Not yet 30 when the Bolsheviks took power, he was one of the youngest, most popular, and most intellectual members of the Communist Party.
Among the millions of victims of the reign of terror in the Soviet Union of the 1930's, Bukharin stands out as a special case.

 Nikolai Bukharin
He was arrested eight months after his son was born, and was executed a year later on charges of counterrevolutionary activities.
At that time there was some tentative talk about a possible rehabilitation, and so Larin filed an application with the Supreme Court.
Acting on the advice of people who were helping him to enter the institute or get a job, he did not indicate in his CVs who his father had been so as not to cause problems for them.

Nikolai Ivanovich Bukharin: A Centenary Appraisal (Greenwood Publishing Group) doi:10.1336/0275932613
Fifty years after his execution by Stalinist Russia, Bukharin has been rehabilated by the Communist Party and invoked as the intellectual antecedent of Gorbachev.
Their conclusion: Bukharin's legacy is easily distorted when he "is torn from his own political and historical context and appropriated for contemporary political movements."
Challenging this view, these authors reevaluate Bukharin's intellectual and political legacy.

 Bukharin: Enrich yourselves!
However, his call to the peasants to enrich themselves was regarded by his opponents in the Soviet Communist Party as indicative of the dangerous capitalist implications of official policy at that time.
Bukharin's speech, of which just a fragment is reproduced here, has been regarded as marking the high point of NEP and its policy of permitting the peasants to develop their farms without too much interference from the authorities.
