Prime Minister of the United Kingdom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Whenever the office of Prime Minister falls vacant, the Sovereign is responsible for appointing the new incumbent; the appointment is formalised at a ceremony known as Kissing Hands.
Ministers, Privy Counsellors, Ambassadors and High Commissioners, senior civil servants, senior military officers, members of important committees and commissions, and several other officials are selected, and in some cases may be removed, by the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister is appointed by the Sovereign, who is bound by constitutional convention to choose the individual most likely to command the support of the House of Commons (normally, the leader of the party with a majority in that body).

British Prime Ministers: Attlee, Clement Richard (1883-1967)
In May 1940 he supported the prime ministry of Winston Churchill and, during the war, served in the war cabinet as lord privy seal (1940-42), deputy prime minister (1942-45), secretary of state for the dominions (1942-43), and lord president of the council (1943-45).
In the first Labour government (1924) he served as undersecretary of state for war, and, in the second Labour ministry (1929-31), he was successively chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster and postmaster general.
Although approving of the British declaration of war in September 1939, he refused to take office in Neville Chamberlain's government.

20th century British elections and prime ministers
In 20th century practice, however, when a parliamentary election produced a clear change of government the prime minister normally resigned (and the leader of the winning party was appointed PM) the day following the election.
The 14th Earl of Home technically held office as prime minister for a few days 19 - 23 Oct 1963 as a member of the Lords before renouncing his peerage and entering the House of Commons at a by-election as Sir Alec Douglas-Home.

British Prime Ministers: Wilson, Harold (1916-1995)
In 1965 Wilson was unable to avert an illegal declaration of independence by the white minority government of the British colony of Rhodesia, and his subsequent efforts to topple the rebel government by the use of economic sanctions rather than by military force failed.
Wilson was first elected to the House of Commons in 1945 and was appointed president of the Board of Trade in 1947, becoming, at age 31, Britain's youngest cabinet minister since William Pitt the Younger in 1792.
He worked to consolidate the party, and after Labour won the general election of 1964, he became prime minister.

MORI - Rating British Prime Ministers
Given the great deal of contemporary discussion and concern about politics and politicians, it is perhaps surprising that honesty is seen as the least required characteristic needed for a Prime Minister to be defined as successful.
Neither of those surveys included Tony Blair (now in his seventh year as Prime Minister) and both were based on small samples.
In addition to asking to rate individual performance, respondents were asked to select up to three out of a list of 20 characteristics that they think are most needed for a Prime Minister to be judged successful.

They have also argued that if the climate for disarmament is to be created, the Government must amend its police reforms, scale down Army activity in the province and remove the ban on republican ministers attending cross-border body meetings.
Talks in Belfast last week involving the province's political leaders and government ministers from London and Dublin failed to produce a breakthrough.
Trimble, re-elected on Saturday as leader of the Protestant Ulster Unionist Party, says he will quit as First Minister of the Province on July 1 unless the anti-British Irish Republican Army begins scrapping its arsenal.

British Prime Ministers: Thatcher, Margaret (1925-)
She was joint parliamentary secretary to the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance (1961-64) and secretary of state for education and science (only the second woman ever to become a Conservative cabinet minister) under Prime Minister Edward Heath (1970-74).
The electorate's memories of Thatcher's decisive leadership during the Falklands conflict helped give her a landslide victory in the general elections of June 1983.
Abroad, Thatcher presided over the orderly establishment of an independent Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) in 1980 after 15 years of illegal separation from British colonial rule under a white minority.

Look Who Will Be Choosing Our Next Prime Minister
Of the 20 prime ministers of the 20th century, only five - including Tony Blair - first entered No 10 as outright general election victors; the other 15 either inherited from a party predecessor, or took over without an intervening general election.
Never before will a prime minister have been chosen by his party in the country, rather than by MPs alone.
In extreme circumstances, this could result in the choice of a new leader, and thus a new prime minister, who was not supported by the Commons majority on whose support a prime minister's authority traditionally rests.
