BBC NEWS Have Your Say Was Beverley Hughes right to resign?
Tony Blair has said Beverley Hughes acted with integrity in resigning as Immigration minister.
Whether Beverley Hughes was right to resign is of no concern to me. What this scandal does, however, is further emphasise the government's incompetence in running this country.
If Beverley Hughes had to resign because she "unwittingly" misled us about immigration, surely Tony Blair should go to as he (perhaps unwittingly) misled us about Iraq.

Beverley Hughes' personal statement to the Commons on resigning as immigration minister
Ms Hughes told MPs: "I've always said that in my political and my personal life nothing is more important than my integrity and, whilst I did not intentionally mislead anyone, I have decided that I cannot in conscience continue to serve as immigration minister.
I believe strongly that on an issue as sensitive as immigration - one so open to misunderstanding - there is a special obligation on me as minister to set the highest standards, not only of my own personal integrity, but also of the policies we are pursuing.

Tom Watson - Labour MP: Beverley Hughes
I think Beverley Hughes's decision was an honorouble one, made for the right reasons, but I think it was the wrong decision.
I haven't followed the Hughes matter in great detail, but it looks to me as though she took a principled position and resigned when it became clear that 'mistakes were made', even though she was not aware of them.
Quote: Tony Blair's official spokesman said Ms Hughes had quit after it became clear she had given a "misleading impression - albeit unwittingly" to Parliament...

 Downing Street Says...: Beverley Hughes/Immigration
Asked if the Prime Minister was satisfied with the way that Beverley Hughes was running the Immigration Service, the PMOS said yes.
Put to him that the latest reports about the department did not bear witness to that sentiment, the PMOS said that credit should be given to the Minister for the fall in asylum applications over the past year.
Having full knowledge about the immigration scam, Ms Hughes covered it up and misled parliament, backed by David Blunket.

Guardian Unlimited Politics Special Reports Beverley Hughes's asylum record
It is ironic that Beverley Hughes has been forced to resign over her generosity to east European migrants (Reports, April 2).
After 18 long months, Beverley Hughes wrote to us, effectively refusing the request, and suggesting there was "no objective documentary evidence" of the massacre in which Charlotte had died.
Amnesty International UK The immigration department may have been chaotic under Beverley Hughes, but it was better than it has been for the last 15 years.

Over 1500 complaints were received regarding the show, and several politicians spoke out against Morris, although David Blunkett, Tessa Jowell and Beverley Hughes all later admitted that they had not seen it.
There was also a vociferous tabloid campaign against Morris, who refused to discuss the issue.
Celebrities including Gary Lineker and Phil Collins, were fooled into declaring their support for a charity called 'Nonce Sense', and the show contained scenes which suggested child abuse onscreen.
