British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli once observed that the two indispensable prerequisites for successful leadership are that the leader know and understand himself, and know and understand the times in which he lives.
Howard Dean, better than any of his opponents, has understood the times up to now.
Howard Dean may not be the Happy Warrior, but for many Americans -- including most Democrats -- January 2004 is not to be confused with Morning in America.

Mary Anne Disraeli, 1st Viscountess Beaconsfield - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mary Anne Disraeli, 1st Viscountess Beaconsfield (11 November 1792 - 15 December 1872), born Mary Anne Evans, married Wyndham Lewis and then, after her first husband's death, Benjamin Disraeli.
It was as a reward for his services to the nation that Queen Victoria made Mary Anne a peeress in her own right, Viscountess Beaconsfield, of Beaconsfield in the County of Buckingham, years before Disraeli accepted the honour of becoming Earl of Beaconsfield.
He joked that he had married her for her money but would do it again for love, but the truth is that she was not really wealthy.

Guardian Unlimited Books By genre The curious case of Benjamin Disraeli
His chivalric wooing of Queen Victoria is well known; it is slightly alarming to contemplate how close to subverting the constitution their mutual admiration came, as Disraeli fed her delusions of supreme power and she plotted to keep him her chief minister for ever.
This physical manifestation outraged many of his contemporaries.
Firstly, of course, there was the matter of his race, which his very name (as his Venetian ancestors had intended) made it impossible to ignore.
