President of the Australian Senate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The President of the Australian Senate is the presiding officer of the Australian Senate, the upper house of the Parliament of Australia.
This is because the Senate is in theory a states' house, and depriving the President of a deliberative vote would have robbed one of the states or one of its Senators' votes (in practice the Senate has always been a party house).
He may be removed from office by a vote of the Senate, or he may resign his office or his seat by writing addressed to the Governor-General.

Australian Senate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rather than being modelled after the House of Lords, as the Canadian Senate was, the Australian Senate was in part modelled after the United States Senate and French Senate.
The Australian Senate serves as a model for some politicians in Canada, particularly in the Western provinces, who wish to reform the Canadian Senate to take a more active legislative role.
Because each state elects 6 senators at each half-senate election, and the quota for election is only 14.7%, some states have upwards of 70 candidates on their ballot papers, and the voter must individually number every single candidate for a "below the line" vote to count.

Election Resources on the Internet: Federal Elections in Australia - The Senate
Normally, one-half of the Senators from each state are elected every three years, along with all territory Senators, for a total of forty contested Senate seats on a half-Senate election.
In each state and territory, Senate seats are awarded to candidates who attain the state or territory quota, calculated by dividing the number of formal first preference votes cast in the state or territory by one more than the number of seats to be filled, and then adding one to the result.
The Australian Senate is composed of 76 members: twelve from each one of Australia's six states, and two from each of the country's two internal territories.
