Australian Greens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brown resigned from the Tasmanian Parliament in 1993, and in 1996 he was elected as a Senator for Tasmania, the first elected as an Australian Greens candidate.
But Chamarette was defeated in 1996 and Margetts also lost her seat in the 1998 federal election, leaving Brown as the sole Green Senator.
The Australian Greens fielded candidates in nearly every House of Representatives seat in Australia, and for all State and Territory Senate positions.

 Reference.com/Encyclopedia/Australian Senate
This led to the eventual intervention by the Governor-General to withdraw the commission of the Australian Prime Minister (in effect dismissing him), the appointment of a minority government from the Opposition in the House of Representatives and the calling of a general election.
Rather than being modelled after the House of Lords the Australian Senate was in part modelled after the United States Senate.
Significant events in the history of the Senate include its role in the downfall of the Whitlam Government during the Australian Constitutional Crisis of 1975, and the Howard Government's controversial acquisition of the support of Senator Mal Colston, thus obtaining a majority and enabling the passage of a great deal of contentious legislation.

 Hexapedia - Australian Greens
There was one MP in the Australian House of Representatives (Michael Organ), who was elected at a by-election in 2002, but he lost his seat at the 2004 elections.
This won them two additional Senate seats, but the success of the Howard government in winning a majority in the Senate meant that the Greens' influence on legislation would actually decrease.
At the federal level there are two Greens in the Australian Senate (Senators Bob Brown and Kerry Nettle), and in July 2005 they will be joined by Senators-elect Christine Milne from Tasmania and Rachel Siewert from Western Australia.

The ideology and politics of the Australian Greens: Part 1
The Greens now register around 10 percent in opinion polls and are likely to win several seats in the Senate, with the possibility, although small, of securing seats in the House of Representatives as well.
Their chief objection was not that this was a war of imperialist plunder, but that it should have been carried out under the auspices of the United Nations.
That is why the first question to Brown after his address was whether, with an expected increase in the number of Greens senators, he would “start negotiating legislation in the Senate rather than obstructing, as you’ve done over the last eight years.”
