 AUSTRAL ISLANDS NZETC
War raging at two of the principal islands, we thought it best to commence our labours on one only, which was not the seat of war, and to which the chief we had brought from Togna belonged.
His body was but partially tataued, his only dress was a girdle or broad bandage round his loins, and his glossy, black, and curling hair was tied in a bunch on the crown of his head, while its extremities hung in ringlets on his shoulders.
This was sufficient, and Auura's friends were content that he should be supreme in his own district, but subordinate to the uncle of the late king, who had been the more successful candidate for the government of the island.

 PACIFIC: Defeat for colonialists
The government has to reflect the proportions of the Congress, and the June 10 elections saw two women take leading positions in the 11-member government — a first for the Pacific Islands.
But Temaru secured the support of three elected “autonomists”: Phillippe Schyle, whose “autonomy party” Fetia Api has joined the UDP, former tourism minister Nicole Bouteau and Chantal Flores from the Austral Islands.
The resulting 29 votes elected UDP candidate Anthony Geros as assembly president, whereupon France’s overseas minister Brigitte Girardin threatened to cut off funding to French Polynesia should Temaru be elected president.

Vegetation and Flora of Pitcairn Islands
There are two uninhabited atolls, Oeno and Ducie, and the four islands are administered as British Overseas Territories.
However, Pitcairn Island is perhaps better known, being the island colonised by the Bounty mutineers.
The small, rounded grey-green leaves are those of Chamaesyce sparrmannii which is restricted to the Pitcairn group and Marotiri Rocks off Rapa; the lighter green leaves are those of Senecio stokesii, which occurs only on Henderson, Rapa and some of the Austral Islands.

The island's population dwindled from 9000 to 500 during his nigh-forty year reign.
The five archipelagoes are called the Society Islands, Austral Islands, Marquesas Islands, Tuamotu Atolls and the Gambier Islands.
The Society Islands were given their name by Captain James Cook in 1773 when he wrote, "To these islands as they lie contingeous to each other, I gave the name of Society Islands." There are fourteen island groups in total, and they are divided into two groups.

Fletcher Christian and his band of mutineers from the H.M.S Bounty tried to settle in Tubuai in 1789, but were forced to flee the island because of skimishes with the men of Tubuai.
Rimatara, the lowest of the high islands, was not found until 1821, when Captain Samuel Pinder Henry of Tahiti arrived, returning the following year with two native teachers who converted the entire population to the Protestant religion.

TUBUAI - LoveToKnow Article on TUBUAI
, or AUSTRAL ISLANDS, an archipelago in the south Pacific Ocean, between 21 49 and 27 41 S., 144 22 and 154 51 W., to the south of the Society Islands, with a total land area of 110 sq.
A Tahitian dialect is spoken in the western islands; in Rapa, however, which with the Bass Islands lies detached from the rest, to the south, the language is akin to that of the Rarotongans in the Cook Islands.
Captain Cook visited Rurutu in 1769 and Tubuai in 5777; Rapa was discovered by George Vancouver in 1791, Vavitao perhaps in 1772 by the Spaniards who attempted to colonize Tahiti, and certainly by Captain Broughton in 1791.

 Research in the Austral Islands
Geologically speaking, the Marquesas, Tuamotus, Society Islands, Cook Islands, and Austral Islands are about the same age and made of the same kind of volcanic rocks as are the Hawaiian islands.
For the past 25 years, geologists have believed that the island chains of Polynesia were formed by lava from hot spots deep in the Earth's interior, perhaps starting near the Earth's metallic core.
Volcanoes in the Austral Islands are younger toward the southeast, as in Hawaii.

 Live Travel Guides: Southern Chile
The landscape grows ever harsher the further south you go — after Southern Patagonia, with its windswept plains, you reach the bottom of the continent, Tierra del Fuego, where a trip through the vast ice fields is must on most travellers’ itineraries.
Similarly, the islands of Chiloe just off the coast are an excellent retreat from the mainland, and a charming step back in time — it seems that little has changed here in the last few hundred years, from the clothes the locals wear, to farming methods.
Just below is the Lake District, also famous the world over for its fantastic hiking in its numerous national parks.
