Anti-authoritarian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anti-authoritarianism is opposition to authoritarianism, which is defined as "concentration of power in a leader or an elite not constitutionally responsible to the people" or the doctrine that advocates such absolutism in rule, as in autocracy, despotism, dictatorship, and totalitarianism.
Anti-authoritarian can also be another term for anarchist, or for those who agree with the anti-capitalist, non-hierarchial, and anti-statist ideals of anarchism, but reject the label anarchist.
Anti-authoritarian also refers to those who reject the authoritarian nature nation-states and of capitalism because of what they see as its coercive actions, top-down boss/worker relations, and exploitative nature.

Eight years (with four more to go) of conservatism, of the religious right, of burgeoning racism, homophobia and anti-Semitism, of occasional bizarre eruptions from groups like the Posse Comitatus, have given all of us a vision of a society populated by a few charismatic individuals and thousands of obedient ideologues.

In almost every case, the socialist movement has been divided along authoritarian, and libertarian lines.
Since capitalism's early beginnings in Europe, and it's authoritarian trend of wage-slavery for the majority of people (working class) by a smaller, elite group (a ruling, or, capitalist class) who own the "means of production": machines, land, factories, there was a liberatory movement in response to capitalism known as "Socialism".

Jennings demonstrates the points made by Paxton, namely, that the Vichy government, in the metropole and in the colonies went beyond what the Germans required in terms of anti Semitism, ultra conservatism, authoritarianism and anti republicanism and formulated policies and practices that were anti Masonic, anti Communistic and ardently Catholic.
Prior to the coming of the Vichy government, colonial administrators, particulary in Guadeloupe advocated assimilation and officially per pounded ideas of "Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity." In Madagascar and Indochina the colonies could anticipate at best an association with France.
But at heart of the colonial empire, even before the Vichy government, was a belief in Social Darwinism that saw the indigenous people of the colonies as proper subjects for domination, not citizens of France.
