The Advertiser: Downer the voters' choice for deputy [ 25jul05 ]
The results indicate Mr Downer, who scored dismal opinion poll ratings toward the end of his eight-month stint as Opposition Leader in 1995, has restored his public image as Foreign Affairs Minister.
Since then, he has strengthened his position within the party, most notably through becoming known as the Cabinet minister who is closest to Mr Howard.
Treasurer Peter Costello, the present deputy, is the overwhelming favourite to succeed Prime Minister John Howard, should he retire this term.

ALEXANDER DOWNER: Well, we had bipartisan support for Australia's negotiating position up until last week, when Mr Latham suddenly and rather unexpectedly came out and said that Labor would restart the negotiations with the East Timorese, and it would recommence the negotiations with the East Timorese if Labor were to win the election.

Once Iraq has a democratically elected government - that will be a government with a great deal more legitimacy than inevitably the interim government has - although I don't know that that is particularly unpopular, but it does not have democratic legitimacy.
