Over half of rural children in female-headed households are in poverty (3.2 million children, 1996).
The Rural Task Force drew from the experiences of rural leaders, existing literature and from the lessons shared through the public comments to frame the discussion under the "Rural America in 2001: Challenges and Opportunities." The strategies presented in this report represent a broad range of actions that could be taken.
IGA is the Departmental liaison to State governments and serves the dual role of representing the State and Tribal perspective in the federal policymaking process as well as clarifying the federal perspective to State and Tribal representatives.

"A Day in New York." In In Other Words: Literature by Latinas of the United States.
Glickman began her career as a literary critic, writing a doctoral dissertation on "The Jewish Image in Brazilian and Argentine Literature," one of the first critical evaluations of Jewish writing in Latin America, which has now become a burgeoning field of academic research and inquiry.
Her interest in Jewish theater in Argentina also led her to compile and translate into English an important anthology, together with Gloria Waldman, titled Argentine Jewish Theatre: A Critical Anthology (1996).

Kushner served as president of the ICLA: International Comparative Literature Association (1979-82), as vice-president of FILLM: International Federation for Modern Languages and Literatures (1987-93), and as its president (1996-99).
Comparative literature as a study of commonalties and differences arose from that identification, and let us face it: it suited well the mental habits of a number of university systems in which the literature of their nation in their language represented the familiar, the culturally safe, and compatible.
What comparative literature as an intellectual pursuit, regardless of institutional barriers, has to offer is far more than a history of what these literatures have received and given, and what processes of transformation they have undergone; it also develops a systemic understanding of these processes.

 Ethnobiology and Conservation in Guyana
There has also been a relative proliferation of new publications concerning development issues in the country, including a summary of a government-sponsored investigation into how economic exploitation of forest resources may be reconciled with the need for conservation [Sizer 1996].
The literature on the Brazilian state of Roraima is very sparse, but includes a few items which are informative about the situation of Amerindians there, and of relevance to the present study.
I have therefore concentrated largely on the literature from Guyana itself, incorporating that from adjacent areas selectively, as relevant.
