The full scale of the economic failure the country was facing became evident, as Britain was forced into the humiliating position of asking international bankers to bail it out to the tune of billions of pounds.
But for many of us, it was also the year that the music came alive with the (rude) young men of pop, including the Sex Pistols and the Clash.

ACME was chartered in March 1976 as a non-profit organization to 'promote the preservation, appreciation and development of those forms of entertainment known as country and country-oriented music' (quoted in RPM, 27 Mar 1976).
It was preceded by the 'Canadian Academy for Country Music Advancement' initiated in 1975 in Toronto by RPM magazine at the first Big Country Awards.

As mainstream country music imploded into pop-country schmaltz after the Urban Cowboy era, a new group of artists would put a little rock in their country, and create a whole new genre of exciting rock-influenced country music.
So the responsibility has fallen to independent artists, to explore the fertile territory between country and rock and roll music, and put out records which don't necessarily fit neatly into a single established format, but are interesting and entertaining for that very reason.
As the 70s progressed, the Eagles would migrate more towards commercial rock, and by the release of "Hotel California" in 1976, most of their country influences were now gone, as were original members Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon.
