Sutherland ran for public office in the 1917 federal election held as a result of the Conscription Crisis of 1917 as a Laurier Liberal, but was defeated in the riding of Oxford North.
Bennett's reforms were insufficient to appease an unruly electorate, however, and the Bennett government was defeated in the 1935 general election.
He was defeated, however, in the 1926 general election which returned the Liberals under William Lyon Mackenzie King to power following the King-Byng Affair.

The renamed Tories were unable to make any gains from their 1935 result, and Manion failed to win his seat, leading to his resignation as party leader two months later.
He spent most of the 1920s on the opposition benches, except for a few months in 1926 when he served as a minister in the second Meighen administration, including the position of Postmaster-General.
However, the economic crisis of the Great Depression destroyed the Bennett government, and Manion, with many others, lost his seat in the 1935 election.

Anyway, we had an election up here on 27 November, 2000.
I wasn't terribly thrilled at the prospect of having to go to the polls 3.5 years after I had last voted, and although I disliked the incumbent sorta left-wing party (and couldn't vote for them), I was less fond of the opposition right-wing party (and wouldn't vote for them).
My election returns, from Victoria, were slow coming in and I wasn't sure whether the Globe and Mail was declaring people as the winners, so I decided to pop over to a riding where I knew someone had been elected -- Calgary Southeast, the riding where I grew up, and where my parents still live.
