 Populist Party Platform
In the 1890s the Populist Party appeared to represent a viable third party independent of the Democrats and Republicans.
A response to the growth of industrialism, the Populists opposed the "concentrated capital" of banks and big businesses and decried the many of the effects that industrialism was having on American society.

Amazon.com: Books: The Reckless Decade: America in the 1890s
The 1890's was a time of unrest in America with corrupt politicians, an agrarian downturn, and other problems.
The decade of the 1890s is quite compelling; it represents the high flowering of an older, quaint America together with social, political, and intellectual trends that would move the nation rapidly into the modernity familiar to us today.
To author Henry Adams, the country in the 1890s was deteriorating into a miasma of ailments; contemporary pessimists have their own list of societal complaints.

 Recent Literature on American Populism
In the names of Jefferson and Jackson, Populist leaders invoked a mythic agrarian past; their platforms also prefigured major reforms of the Progressive Era and the New Deal.
The Populist movement of the 1890s can serve, for historians, as a window on both old and new.
Thus the People's Party deserves attention not only as an "agrarian crusade," but as a reflection of the many issues brought forward in the 1890s by industrialization, social dislocation, and political change.

The Populist Movement and the Struggle for Reform in America
In order to challenge the Democratic and Republican parties, the Populists would have to win the support of both White and Black farmers, industrial workers, small businessmen, and even women.
In the early 1890s, worried farmers in the West and the South formed the Populist party, hoping to win control of state and federal government and use that control to protect their farms and way of life.
The Populist political movement began as a movement of Western and Southern small farmers in the 1880s.

When Congress adjourned at the end of June 1893, President Cleveland — fearing a possible adverse impact on the markets — secretly dealt with a major health problem.
Like most major financial downturns, the depression of the 1890s was preceded by a series of shocks that undermined public confidence and weakened the economy.
The depression of the 1890s did not fully abate until 1897.

 Italy In 1890S - 1900S
It was not uncommon for the prime ministers of the time to issue decrees without parliament by claiming royal authority, or to dissolve opposition parties.
The 1890s, however, also marked a time of great crisis, as riots over the prices of food grew increasingly common, and government oppression became more and more blatant.
Only thirty years after the Piedmontese army marched into Rome to unite Italy under one government, the country suddenly found itself on the brink of the twentieth century and a rapidly changing world.

 MoMA.org Exhibitions 1997 Paris - The 1890s
This exhibition of approximately 200 works, drawn from the Museum's collection and augmented with loans from New York collections, focuses on the private and public aspects of printmaking during this pivotal stage in the history of the modern print.
Prints were created as objects of private contemplation for the homes of a new generation of bourgeois collectors, but they also appeared in new venues throughout the public arena.
The 1890s in Paris, forever popularized as the time of the can-can and cabaret, was a period of unparalleled printmaking activity.

 Amazon.ca: Books: The American 1890s-PB
The American 1890s: A Cultural Reader is a wide-ranging anthology of essays, criticism, and fiction first printed in periodicals during those last remarkable years of the nineteenth century, a decade commonly referred to as the "golden age" of periodical culture.
Industrialization was well under way and with it a burgeoning sense of professionalism and a growing middle class that was becoming increasingly anxious about issues of race, gender, and class.
Bringing together a carefully chosen selection of primary sources, The American 1890s presents a remarkable variety of views--nostalgic, protective, imperialist, progressive, egalitarian, and democratic--held by American citizens a century ago.

Biography & History of Scott Joplin
It was probably in 1896 that he attended music classes at George R. Smith College in Sedalia, an institution for African-Americans established by the Methodist Church on land donated by daughters of the town’s founder.
This technical deficit did not prevent him from developing as a composer.
Since the college and its records were destroyed in a fire in 1925, we have no evidence of the extent of Joplin’s studies, but anecdotes suggest that until the end of the 1890s he still lacked complete mastery of music notation.

 1890s Photo Card (CDVs) Backs
The last William and Williams must be a late 1890s or 1900s card and has gone to an art design.
The next, an early Williams and Williams has a design that belongs in the late 1880s, this was replaced by the next card 'The Horn of Plenty' and this was used perhaps 1893 to about 1901 and probably occurs in your album.
As Kodak cameras were now being used by anyone, the studios had to claim that their photographs were better and more artistic, a quality product and this is reflected in the designs.

 MyDD :: 1890s Baseball and 2000s Politics
The 1890s saw the dirtiest and most corporate baseball in the long history of the sport.
In particular, 1890s baseball saw the birth (and one of only three baseball instances) of the third party, a crackdown on organized labor by the corporates, merger and acquisition activity, and brute force plus dirty tricks working against "scientific" baseball.
In many ways the baseball story seems to have some lessons for the politicians.

This is a list of 25 technological inventions and advances from the 1890s.
