An extant letter from Buchanan to Walker on October 22, 1857, states that Buchanan "rejoiced to learn … that the convention of Kansas [would] submit the constitution to the people." Secretary Cobb wrote to Moore, the vice-president of the Lecompton convention an "urgent and strong" letter urging the convention to seek voter approval.
The Democratic administration did not want the decisions of the convention legislators to be "objectionable to the free State Democrats in the Territory." Nevertheless, Buchanan and his cabinet decided to support Calhoun in opposition to Walker.

he mutiny of 1857 failed not because the Sikhs, or the people of the Punjab, or of any other State or province, did not join it, but because it had no noble sentiment behind it, no plan to guide it and no sincere leader to see it through.
Openly disobeyed and insulted by the mutineers, Emperor Bahadur Shah, in disgust, threatened to abdicate and leave the capital and commit suicide, as is evident from his memoranda August 9, 1857, addressed to the officers of the Army at Delhi.
The mutiny at Meerut on May 10, 1857, which later became widespread and developed into a revolt in some parts of the U.P. and neighboring territories, has been called by some writers 'the Indian War of Independence'.

Local 1857 urges public comment and inquiry into the unnecessary dismantling of decades of community-building in our county library branches.
Furthermore, such drastic reorganization of individually staffed and managed libraries is not necessary to achieve the goals stated as justification for clustering.
It is the contention of the leadership and membership of Local 1857 that the reorganization of the library system into "clusters" degrades service to patrons, erodes the sense of community at branches, harms staff livelihood, violates KCLS' "trip reduction" policy, and wastes taxpayer dollars.

Snow believes this strange clashed die combination is the responsibility of Frederick Eckfeldt, son of George Eckfeldt, the Foreman of the Mint.
The metal composition was changed from nearly pure Copper to a Copper-Nickel mixture that gave added strength and a lighter color, earning the coins the nickname "White Cents." To ensure widespread distribution, the Mint produced over 17,000,000 of the new Small Cents, nearly six times the production of Large Cents in the previous year.
1857 saw the end of an era as the old, bulky Large Cents were replaced with a new, smaller One Cent piece designed by James Longacre (the "new" design was actually an old one, borrowed from the reverse of Christian Gobrecht's Silver Dollars of 1836-1839).
