MSN Encarta - Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott Case, landmark case of the 1850s in which the Supreme Court of the United States declared that African Americans were not U.S. citizens.
The Court also determined that the portion of the Missouri Compromise of 1820 that banned slavery in U.S. territories north and west of the state of Missouri was unconstitutional.

 TheHamptons.com: Words: David Reynolds
There was direct historical reference, then, for Whitman's venomous diatribes, as in the 1855 preface where he impugned the "swarms of cringers, suckers, doughfaces, lice of politics, planners of sly involutions for their own preferment to city offices or state legislatures or the judiciary or congress or the presidency" (CP, 18).
Since the Know Nothings in 1854 and early '55 were championing his favorite causes--antislavery, temperance, rights for working people--he may have found the American Party appealing.
The Whig party, weak for years, broke up in 1854 as a result of sectional over slavery, and Whitman's Democratic party became strife-ridden as well.

By the 1850s, the population of New York had passed the half-million mark, and the city continued its march north.

The result was a `murphy' which had a delicious baked skin, but was yet soft and tasty in the middle, ready for the application of butter, salt and pepper to make a filling and appetising meal.

This, the first of three components, deals with the 1850s.

Battle for Hyde Park: ruffians, radicals and ravers, 1850s-1990s
The state likes to present itself as invincible, with laws that can't be broken enforced by police that can't be beaten.
In the 1850s and 1860s people repeatedly ignored bans en masse until the state was forced to back down; the Royal Parks and Gardens Act 1872 allowed public meetings in the park, albeit with some restrictions.
By the 1850s, Hyde Park and Trafalgar Square were the only two major open spaces in central London, and both were the scenes of conflict as the state tried to stop people meeting in them.

The C. Warren Irvin, Jr., Collection of Charles Darwin and Darwiniana: Marine Biology and the 1950s
While Owen would later become the butt of brutal attacks by the Darwinians, especially Huxley, his intransigence in the 1850s warned the still-cautious Darwin about the risks of discussing human evolution until his general theory was established.
Among the practical experiments that Darwin undertook in the 1850s for his work on species was a study of how pigeon-fanciers selected and exaggerated particularly-desired features for exhibition through successive pigeon generations, until quite distinct varieties of pigeon (pouter, carrier, and fantail) had been developed.
Subsequently, Kingsley would be one of the first clergymen to write in support of Darwin's Origin and would incorporate ideas from it in his children's fantasy The water babies (1863).

UCC Anoka traces its roots to circa 1850s model
In the 1850s, there were few people in what is Anoka today — mostly loggers, fur traders and members of the Sioux and Chippewa tribes, according to Curtis Johnson, historian and minister of adult education for the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Although the Congregational Church was founded in the Anoka in 1855, it wasn’t until 1857 that the first church building was constructed, subsequently destroyed by fire in the early 1930s.
In observance of that moment in history, First Congregational UCC Anoka will be celebrating its 150th anniversary May 1, although the actual founding date of the church was on May 6, 1855, said the Rev. Sharon Fazel, co-pastor.
