 Texas Governor George T. Wood: An Inventory of Records at the Texas State Archives, 1848-1849
Wood was defeated by the anti-Houston faction in 1849.
Born in Georgia on March 12, 1795, Wood was a veteran of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend at nineteen and served in the Georgia state assembly.
Two letters dated November 21, 1849 were donated to the Texas State Archives by L.K. Miller as part of the Washington Daniel Miller papers on June 2, 1879.

Born in Hampshire, England, to a wealthy family, Sclater studied geology at Oxford, taking a B.A. in 1849, then studied law and was called to the bar.
Visiting the United States in 1856, he formed friendships with John Cassin, S.F. Baird, and Joseph Leidy and took a canoe trip down the Mississippi before returning to London, where he published an account of his travels.
Benjamin himself died at the hands of Utes in 1849.

90,000 people were evicted in 1849 alone, though up to one third were allowed to return as 'caretakers'.
In the case of the 1846-49 Irish Famine, the response of Tory government head Sir Robert Peel was to purchase some foreign maize for delivery to Ireland, and to repeal the Corn Laws, which prohibited imports of the much cheaper foreign grain to Ireland.
The repeal of the Corn Laws was enacted over a three-year period from 1846 to 1849 and came too late to help the starving Irish, and was politically unpopular, resulting in the end of Sir Peel's ministry.
