Their actions were couched in popular perceptions of Jewish opposition to Ukrainian self-rule and stereotypes of Jewish Bolshevism. Whether politically motivated or driven by anti-Semitism masked in political terms, the pogroms of 1919 caused some Jews to join the Red Army and eventually acquire posts in the Communist party.
